US Secretary of State Maksa Raviyya told Panama President Jose Raul Mulino on Sunday that China should immediately reduce the influence of China on the Panama Canal area, otherwise the US administration can take action. This is Rubio’s first foreign trip as US Secretary of State. Earlier, President Donald Trump had said that the control of the Panama Canal should be handed over to America. President Mulino admitted that China’s role in the ports at the end of the canal has created concern for the US.

Rubio told Mulino on behalf of Trump that the US President initially determined that China’s presence in the canal region violates the treaty under which the US handed over the waterway to Panama in 1999. In that treaty, the American -made canal talks about permanent neutrality.

The US handed over the 1999 Panama Canal to Panama. It was said in that agreement that this canal created by America would have neutrality. Now the US says that China’s increasing influence is breaking this condition. The US State Ministry said, ‘Minister Rubis have made it clear that this situation is not acceptable. If the changes are not made immediately, the US will have to take necessary steps to protect its rights. Trump had said that China was running the canal.
