Steve Smith announces retirement, ODI cricket will not play for Australia

Australia captain Stive Smith has announced retirement after losing the semi -finals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against Team India. In the absence of Pat Cummins, Steve Smith was the captain of the team, but his captain was able to travel till the team semi -finals. In such a situation, he has now announced his retirement from ODI International cricket. However, he will be seen playing Tests and T20 International Cricket for Australia. Also, he wishes to play the Olympics for the country in 2028.

According to Cricket Australia, Smith will be available for selection in Test and T20 International cricket. His decision probably reflects the desire to be a part of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Steve Smith told the team colleagues about his decision after losing the Champions Trophy semi -final in Dubai and said it seems that now is the right time to leave the game.

In a press release, Smith said that, this has been a great journey and I have enjoyed it every minute. There have been many amazing moments and excellent memories. Winning two World Cups was a great achievement, as well as many magnificent colleagues shared the journey. Now it is a great opportunity for people to start preparing for 2027 ODI World Cup, so it seems that now is the right time to leave the game. Test cricket is still priority and I am excited to play the World Test Championship Final, West Indies in winter and then against England at home. I think I still have a lot to contribute on that platform.

Let me tell you, 35 -year -old Steve Smith made his debut in ODIs against West Indies at Melbourne Cricket Ground on 19 February 2010 and played his last ODI against India on 4 March 2025. In these 15 years, he made many achievements. His batting in the debut match did not come, as he was more recognized as a spinner. He got two wickets in that match. At the same time, he scored 73 runs in 96 balls against India in the final match.
