Tawwur Rana, accused of Mumbai terror attacks, has approached the US Supreme Court to put an emergency ban on his extradition in India. According to India Today report, Rana in his application said that he is very likely to be harassed in India as he is a Muslim of Pakistani origin. 63 -year -old Tehwwur Rana is currently lodged in Los Angeles jail. In his petition, Rana said that he is suffering from many diseases, including advanced heart artery, cognitive decline with Parkinson’s and potential bladder cancer. Rana’s lawyers argued that he would not be able to survive for a long time to face the trial. Rana’s legal team further stated that it cannot be sent to “Hornets Nest” where he would be described as “the goal of national, religious and cultural enmity”.
The application cited the report of 2023 Human Rights Watch, which has been accused by the BJP -led government in India of systematic discrimination and stigma with religious minorities, especially Muslims. India has dismissed this report as baseless. The application further states that the Government of India is becoming “rapidly autocratic”, arguing that Rana’s fair testing rights will be in danger.
