The controversy has arisen after being rejected by the authorities permission to celebrate Holi Milan inside the campus at Aligarh Muslim University, due to which some students have alleged that the administration is discriminating against Hindus. The students have now threatened to raise the matter in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not getting permission. Akhil Kaushal, a master’s degree student, sought permission on 25 February. On behalf of Hindu students, a letter addressed to the Vice Chancellor was handed over to the university’s proctor Wasim Ali, seeking permission to organize Holi Milan ceremony at the NRSC Club of the university on 9 March.

It is being claimed that the students were later informed by the Proctor that the administration has decided not to allow the Holi program to be held inside the campus. Akhil Kaushal said that till now we have not been allowed. Professor Wasim Ali Khan said that on 26 February, five students gave me a signed letter addressed to the Vice Chancellor, requesting the VC to allocate him to organize a special program for the Holi celebrations on 9 March.
He said that the university decided that since no such special permission has been given before before, it will still be followed. Holi is celebrated by the students in their respective departments and hostels in the university. The university is not in favor of allowing a particular function. All India Karni Sena President Yenndra Singh Chauhan said that some students of AMU had sought permission from the AMU administration to celebrate the ‘Holi Milan’ ceremony, but the university has refused it. Today, while addressing the PM, we have given a memorandum to the DM, which states that Hindu students are being treated separately in AMU. If permission is not received, then on March 10, we will enter AMU and celebrate Holi with students.

UP Tourism Minister Jayveer Singh said that if a university in India only supports a particular religion and prohibits celebrating other festivals, then such cases should be reconsidered.
