Amid controversy over Aurangzeb, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut made some statement that started the controversy. On Friday, Sanjay Raut described the BJP rule in Maharashtra as worse than Aurangzeb and claimed that farmers were dying due to the saffron party. He claimed that farmers, unemployed people and women are committing suicide in the state. He said that it has been 400 years since Aurangzeb was buried. Forget it. Are farmers committing suicide due to Aurangzeb in Maharashtra? They are doing this because of you. He asked what the government is doing if the Mughal ruler tortured. The BJP leads the ruling Mahayuti alliance in the state, including Shiv Sena and NCP.
Raut said, “Farmers are committing suicide. BJP’s term is worse than Aurangzeb.” He was answering the question asked on Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s remarks, stating that “everyone” feels that the grave of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar should be removed. But this should be done in a legal purview as the previous Congress government kept this site under the patronage of Archaeological Survey of India.
The descendants of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, BJP Satara MP Udayanraje Bhosle, demanded the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. Aurangzeb is remembered for his fight with the Marathas in Maharashtra, who opposed his expansionist ambitions. Shivaji Maharaj’s son Sambhaji was caught, tortured and killed on his orders.
