The Belgian government is keeping a close watch on the case of fugitive Indian businessman Mehul Choksi. The Belgian government has confirmed the fugitive Indian diamond businessman Mehul Choksi’s presence on its land, saying that it is giving “great importance and attention” to the matter. Talking about the case, Belgian Federal Public Service (FPS) Foreign Affairs spokesman and head of social media and press service David Jordan said that the government is closely monitoring the matter and is being handled very carefully.

Fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi is living in Belgium, the European nation confirmed a news channel. Choksi Punjab National Bank (PNB) is one of the most wanted people in India in connection with debt fraud. Belgian Foreign Ministry confirmed the news channel NDTV that he was aware of his presence and “it is very important and attention”. However, the country said that he does not comment on personal matters.

News agency ANI has also published a report about Choksi’s presence in Belgium. “I can confirm that Federal Public Service (FPS) foreign affairs are aware of the matter and are given great importance and attention. Meanwhile, according to the news agency Associated Press, Indian authorities have requested Belgium officials to take initiative to extradite India. However, no official confirmation has been made by New Delhi. Some media reports suggested that Choksi is currently living in Antwerp, Belgium with his wife Preeti after receiving the country’s residence card. Preeti is considered a citizen of Belgium.
The Associated Press report also claimed that Choksi gave misleading and fabricated documents to get a residence in Belgium to avoid extradition in India. The report quoted sources as saying, “Choksi submitted incorrect declarations and forged documents to Belgian officials and in his application process incorrectly introduced its nationality, as well as failed to disclose the details of its current citizenship of India and Antigua.” The report also mentions that Choksi was planning to go to Switzerland for medical treatment at a famous cancer hospital.

Earlier, Indian authorities had requested Belgium officials to take initiative to extradite India, as stated the media outlet Associated Times, which focuses on the Caribbean region. The report was not immediately confirmed by Indian officials. Mehul Choksi, a 65 -year -old, owns a fugitive Indian businessman and the retail jewelery firm Gitanjali group in India. He is wanted in India in the case of ₹ 13,500 crore bank loan fraud case. According to a Business Standard report, Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are accused in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, where it is alleged that the Choksi-modern pair cheated more than ₹ 14,000 crore from the bank.
