Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha and party leader Fayaz Ahmed have decided to file a petition in the Supreme Court on behalf of the party to challenge the Waqf Amendment Bill, which got the President’s approval on Saturday to become a law. RJD leaders argued that this Act could have significant impact on the management of Waqf properties. According to the ANI report, the two leaders will knock on the door of the Supreme Court tomorrow. Opposition parties, Congress, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Amanatullah Khan have also moved the apex court challenging the Act.

Tejashwi Yadav on Waqf Act

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said on Saturday that if his party forms a government in Bihar after the upcoming elections, the Waqf Act will be thrown into the dustbin. He said that we believe that Muslims are being targeted today and tomorrow the Sikhs and Christians can turn. Yadav claimed that the bill has been brought to divert people’s attention from problems like unemployment. He said that his party will not allow BJP to implement this bill in Bihar. He also criticized Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who is struggling with internal discord within the party regarding the Waqf Act. He said that JD (U) is trying to sell this law. They are trying their best to prove that this bill will benefit Muslims, but they have not got success in this. Just see how JD (U) forced its Muslim leaders to address a press conference, which was quite unsuccessful.

Earlier in March, there were protests in the Bihar Legislative Assembly, seeking to fully implement the recommendations of the Sachar Committee to withdraw it and improve the socio-economic situation of Muslims. Opposition leaders, including RJD chief Lalu Prasad and opposition Leader Tejashwi Yadav, supported the protests of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) demanding the cancellation of the bill.
