3 died and 40 houses damaged in flash floods following heavy rains in ramban district

Due to heavy rains in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir, there was a sudden flood at different places, killing three people. The disaster also caused landslides and hailstorms in the areas, causing heavy damage to infrastructure and properties. The local administration and disaster management team have started relief and rescue operations and appealed to the citizens to take precautions.

Many buildings and vehicles damaged

Many buildings and vehicles have been damaged due to heavy rains and landslides after heavy rains and hailstorms in Ramban district. According to the information revealed, ten houses were completely destroyed in the disaster, while 40 houses were damaged. Police and district administration have taken out about 90 to 100 people trapped in the affected area safely.

Traffic on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway affected

A part of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway 44 in Ramban district has been badly affected after a landslide caused by continuous rains. The administration has advised people to avoid passing through this highway. Deputy Traffic Inspector Javed Kataria said, ‘National Highway (Jammu-Srinagar NH) is completely blocked (due to landslides). Avoid passing through this highway until the weather improves. Withdrawal work is going on, but it does not seem that the highway will open before evening or tomorrow because it is raining continuously.

What did the officials say?

A senior government official said that heavy rains, cloudburst, strong winds, landslides and hailstorm have caused heavy losses in the entire district. The official said, ‘We are monitoring the situation and later (of loss) will be assessed so that the affected people can be assisted. At this time our priority is to save the lives of people.

Union Minister’s statement

Accepting the seriousness of the situation, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said that overnight, the Ramban area, which includes areas around the city of Ramban, had heavy hailstorms, many landslides and strong winds. The national highway was blocked and unfortunately, three people died and the property of some families was destroyed. He said, ‘I am in constant touch with the Deputy Commissioner. The district administration deserves praise for timely and quick action, which helped to save many precious lives. MP from Udhampur Singh said that all relief is being provided including financial help.
