Will the government be formed again in Manipur? 21 MLAs wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah

21 MLAs have written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah urging to form a popular government in Manipur, which is now under President’s rule, so that peace and general situation in the state can be ensured. The Center imposed President’s rule in Manipur on 13 February, where more than 250 people have been killed and thousands of people have died in ethnic violence between Metei and Cookie Groups since May 2023. President’s rule was imposed after the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. The state assembly, which has a term till 2027, has been suspended.

The letter is signed by 13 BJP MLAs, 3 NPP MLAs, 3 Naga People’s Front MLAs and two independent members of the assembly. It said, “The people of Manipur have welcomed President’s rule … with high hopes and expectations. However, it is going to be three months, but no clear action has been seen yet to bring peace and general situation.” It states that there is a strong apprehension among people that violence may occur again in the state. Many civilian organizations have come out openly against the imposition of President’s rule and are demanding the establishment of a popular government.

The legislators said in a letter written on April 10, “These organizations have started organizing public rallies, street meetings, inciting the general public, not accusing the ruling legislators of not claiming to form a popular government and implement the responsibility of implementing PR (President’s rule) in the state.” An MLA said that the letter was received by the Ministry of Home Affairs on 29 April and it was made public on Wednesday. The legislators also said, “We feel that the establishment of a popular government is the only means to bring peace and normal status in Manipur.”
