These warnings have come amid increasing concerns about the bride’s smuggling in China. Due to its ended policy and cultural preference for sons, China is struggling with gender imbalance.
The Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh issued an advice, urging its citizens to stay away from illegal border marriage arrangements and beware of online matchmaking schemes. According to a report by the official controlled Global Times, the embassy warned the Chinese citizens not to fall into the deception of misleading border dating materials on the small video platforms or to search for so-called foreign wives through informal networks or commercial matchmaking agencies, which are prohibited under Chinese law. It also urged citizens to reject the concept of buying foreign wife and carefully think before getting married in Bangladesh.
These warnings have come amid increasing concerns about the bride’s smuggling in China. Due to its ended policy and cultural preference for sons, China is struggling with gender imbalance. It is estimated that 30 million Chinese men are unable to find spouse and are called “remaining men”. Along with this, declining marriage rates have promoted the demand of foreign brides. A recent report by The Daily Star highlights cases of Bangladeshi women being allegedly sold in China on the pretext of marriage, where criminal gangs carry out these smuggling works.
The embassy said that many of these marriages are done through illegal or exploitative means and can have serious legal consequences. According to Chinese law, marriage agencies are prohibited from facilitating or hiding the border matchmaking services, and individuals are banned from benefiting or by deception from involvement in such activities. The embassy urged the victims of romance or marriage scam to immediately report to China’s public safety officials.
