Today we are going to tell you about the connection of Budhni Manjhian and Jawaharlal Nehru- Budhni Manjhian was a Santhali woman and was living a simple life in Dhanbad village in West Bengal till 1959, when her life took an incredible turn and a simple gesture of the then Prime Minister changed the attitude of incidents for the coming years. On 6 December 1959, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru went to inaugurate the dam on the Damodar River in Dhanbad, West Bengal, which is also known as the ‘bereavement of Bengal’. Nehru then emphasized that a woman working on the project became part of the inauguration and the Damodar Valley Corporation chose Ravana Manjhi, a Santhali man with 15 -year -old Budhni to welcome the Prime Minister.

However, what happened after this remained forever with Budhni. Nehru also garlanded Budhni in response to Budhni garlanding him. He also emphasized that the teenager should indicate the start of operations by pressing the button on the power plant. She was standing with Nehru, which angered the tribal community.

When Budhni returned to her village with pomp that evening, the elders of the village of Karbona told her that she had really married her by garlanding the Prime Minister at the ceremony. Also, since Nehru was not Santhal, she was no longer part of the community and was asked to leave the village. The stubborn attitude of the community ensured that the boycott was completely done. When there was no alternative, Budhni left her house and then took refuge in Panchet with the help of Sudhir Dutta. In 1962, Budhni, working in Damodar Valley Corporation, was fired and she found herself helpless.

Interestingly, when Rajiv Gandhi came to know about his plight in 1985, he met him and in this meeting he requested that he be restored to his job in Damodar Valley Corporation. Her request was accepted and worked there until 2005, when she retired.
