The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said that the process of National Caste Census and Caste Calculation is likely to start from October 1, 2026. The Modi government is planning to conduct caste census in two phases. After about 94 years, caste census will take place across the country. The national census will be done in two phases. First of the mountainous regions of the north. Sources said that the census in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh will start from 1 October 2026.

The Ministry of Home Affairs said that along with the calculation of castes, it has been decided to organize the population census-2027 in two phases. The reference date for the Population Census-2027 will be held at 00:00 on the first day of March, 2027. The reference date for the union territory of Ladakh and Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will be held at 00.00 on the first day of October 2026. The decision was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs on April 30, 2025 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Information Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had said that the census work will be done in a transparent manner.

The ministry further said that India’s census is done under the provisions of Census Census Act, 1948 and Census Rules, 1990. India’s previous census was done in two phases in 2011, ie I) Phase I – House Listing (HLO) (1 April to 30 September 2010) and (ii) Phase II – Population Counting (PE) (PE) (09 February to 28 February 2011) Reference date – The first day of March 2011 at 00:00 pm, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, except for the snow -covered non -covered non -covered non -covered areas of India, for which this 11 of September 2010, for which 11 of September 2010. However, the census work was postponed due to the outbreak of Covid-19 epidemic across the country.
