The ED has questioned former Indian cricketers Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina as well as actors Sonu Sood and actress Urvashi Rautela as part of the ongoing investigation of promotional links with banned betting platforms including 1xbet, Pairplay, Parimatch and Lotus 365.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has focused on advertisements made by former cricketers and film personalities, increasing the scope of investigation of illegal online betting platforms. The ED has questioned former Indian cricketers Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina as well as actors Sonu Sood and actress Urvashi Rautela as part of the ongoing investigation of promotional links with banned betting platforms including 1xbet, Pairplay, Parimatch and Lotus 365.
According to NDTV Profit, the ED is a top official said that these betting platforms are using surrogate names such as 1xbat and 1xbat sports lines in the platform advertising operations. Advertisements often include QR codes that take users to betting sites which are a clear violation of Indian law. Notice has already been issued to some famous celebrities while others are likely to be issued notices soon.
The report states that preliminary investigation shows that they can violate many Indian laws from endorsement. These include the Information Technology Act, Foreign Exchange Management Act, Prevention of Mana Laudering Act and Benami Transaction Act as well as consultations issued by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
