The Election Commission of India on Monday declared the results of the by -elections held on June 19 in five assembly seats in four states. Among them, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won two seats, while Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) won one seat each. You emerged with the biggest edge, which won in Ludhiana West in Punjab and Visavadar in Gujarat. The Congress captured the Nilambur seat in Kerala, the BJP retained its stronghold in Kadi, Gujarat, while the Trinamool Congress won Kaliganj in West Bengal easily.
‘AAP’ retained two seats in Punjab, Gujarat
On Monday, Gopal Italia of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the Visavadar seat of Gujarat in the assembly by -elections in four states and his party also retained the Ludhiana West seat in Punjab, while the Congress -led UDF in Kerala snatched the Nilambur seat from the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF). At the same time, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gujarat retained the tough seat, while the Trinamool Congress is leading the Kaliganj assembly seat in Nadia district of West Bengal.

Voting was held on June 19 under the by -election in these five constituencies. According to data shared by the Election Commission, Italia, former chairman of the Gujarat unit of AAP, defeated his nearest rival and BJP candidate Kirit Patel by a margin of 17,554 votes in Visavadar seat in Junagadh district. Despite having almost full dominance in the state, the BJP has not won the Visavadar seat since 2007.
‘AAP’ retained its occupation of Ludhiana West Assembly seat
The seat was vacant in December 2023 after the then MLA of AAP Bhupendra Bhayani resigned and joined the ruling BJP. The ruling ‘AAP’ in Punjab has retained its possession of the Ludhiana West Assembly seat. Its candidate Sanjeev Arora defeated his nearest rival and Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu by a margin of 10,637 votes. According to Election Commission data, Arora got 35,179, while Ashu got 24,542 votes.
BJP’s Jeevan Gupta got 20,323 votes while Philanthropy Singh Ghumman of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) got only 8,203 votes. In January, it was necessary to hold a by -election on this seat due to the death of ‘AAP’ MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi. Thanking voters, ‘AAP’ national convenor Arvind Kejriwal said that people in Gujarat are fed up with BJP and in the by -elections they rejected both Congress and BJP.
He claimed in a post on ‘X’, “Both Congress and BJP parties contested both seats. Both of them had the same objective – defeating you. But people rejected these parties at both places. ”Rajendra Chavda of BJP defeated Congress’s Ramesh Chavda by a margin of 39,452 votes in Kadak seat in Mehsana district reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC). The seat was vacant due to the death of BJP MLA Karsan Solanki in February.
The LDF government led by Pinarayi Vijayan in Kerala suffered a setback as the Congress -led Joint Democratic Front (UDF) snatched the Nilambur assembly seat by a margin of 11,077 votes. Aryadan Shaukat of Congress defeated CPI (M) state secretariat member M. Swaraj. This is the fourth subcontinent blow during the second term of Pinarayi Vijayan Sarkar for LDF, led by the Communist Party of Marxist.
LDF has earlier lost in the by -elections in Puthupalli, Palakkad and Thrikkarakara assembly seats. The ruling CPI (M) said that she accepts the mandate. The important thing is that for the first time LDF has lost its current seat to its political rival. The Nilambur seat was vacant after the resignation of LDF -backed independents and two -time MLA PV Anwar. Swaraj said that the LDF would closely analyze the results, but he rejected the anti -incumbency against the Left Government.
At the same time, Shaukat said that such a result was expected. He said, “This is a major victory against the LDF government. The by -election attracted widespread attention as it was seen as a semi -final for the Pinarayi Vijayan government. This is the fourth year of the tenure of the government. This victory for UDF will be to boost morale before next year’s assembly elections. In West Bengal, the ruling Trinamool Congress was leading by more than 19,000 votes in the by -election in Kaliganj assembly seat in Nadia district.
After the seven -phase counting, Trinamool candidate Alifa Ahmed got 32,308 votes, while his nearest rival and CPI (M) -backed Congress candidate Kaabil Uddin Sheikh got 13,144 votes. Election officials said that BJP candidate Ashish Ghosh is third with 11,987 votes. In February this year, after the death of Trinamool MLA Naseeruddin Ahmed, the by -election was needed here. His daughter Alifa Ahmed was fielded by the party.
