A boy infected with Nipah virus died in Kerala, the other seven tested negative: George

A 14-year-old boy infected with Nipah virus in Malappuram, Kerala, died on Sunday. He was being treated here. State Health Minister Veena George gave this information.

George said six friends of the deceased and a 68-year-old man were tested for Nipah infection, but their reports came negative. The six friends of the deceased were in direct contact with him, but the 68-year-old man was not, the minister said.

The elderly man was tested for the infection because he had a fever. He said 330 people had come in direct contact with the teenager, of which 68 are health workers. George said, out of the people who came in direct contact with the boy, 101 are in the high-risk category, of which seven have been admitted to the hospital for treatment.

None of the family members of the deceased teenager showed any symptoms of Nipah infection. The health department on Sunday conducted a survey of 307 houses in two panchayats, including Pandikkad, the epicentre of the epidemic, and found 18 cases of fever, while a survey of 310 houses in Anakkayam panchayat revealed 10 cases of fever.

The minister said none of these people were in direct contact with the boy. The health department has directed that the protocol should be strictly followed in seat allocation for Class 11 students in the district on Monday.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday condoled the death of a 14-year-old boy who succumbed to Nipah in Malappuram. Vijayan said all efforts were made to save the teenager.

George said the boy was from Pandikkad and suffered a heart attack at 10.50 am on Sunday but could not be saved. “He was unconscious and was put on a ventilator,” George said.

After he suffered a cardiac arrest, many efforts were made to revive him but all efforts failed and he died at 11.30 am. The minister said his last rites would be performed as per international protocol.

“The district collector will discuss with the boy's parents and family and only after that a decision will be taken regarding the funeral,” George said. The minister said the teenager had gone to school on May 11 but so far no number of symptomatic cases have been reported.
