Advocates were on strike on Friday against the declining number of judges in the Allahabad High Court and the proposed amendment to the Advocates Act. The High Court Bar Association decided to strike in a meeting held on Thursday.

According to the association’s proposal, the advocates gathered at the main gate (gate number 3) on Friday morning and did not enter the court room. Bar Association President Anil Tiwari said that the number of posts of judges in the Allahabad High Court is 160, but currently less than half of judges are working in Allahabad.

He said that on the one hand 55 judges are working in Allahabad, while only 23 judges are working in its Lucknow bench. The number of pending cases is increasing day by day due to not having sufficient number of judges. According to the association, the advocates are against the amendment of the Advocates Act proposed by the government as it is against the interests of the advocates.
