The Supreme Court has issued notices to the governments of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Karnataka after the mother of a Bengaluru techie who died by suicide filed a habeas corpus petition seeking custody of her grandson. In her petition, Atul’s mother sought the custody of her four-and-a-half-year-old grandson, saying that the child’s whereabouts are currently unknown. He also left a 24-page suicide note, detailing marital issues and emotional distress from multiple cases filed against him by his wife. In the death note, Atul also accused a family court judge in Uttar Pradesh of favoring his in-laws. Atul’s wife was arrested from Gurgaon (Haryana), while his mother-in-law and brother-in-law were arrested from Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. The trio were arrested by the Bengaluru Police on the basis of a complaint of abetment to suicide filed by Atul’s brother. After being produced in Bengaluru court, he has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days.
In her petition, Atul’s mother argued that the Supreme Court’s intervention was necessary to resolve the case and ensure justice due to the involvement of three states – Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Karnataka. The hearing of this case will take place in January next year. Atul Subhash married Nikita Singhania, a software professional, in 2019. Subhash was facing nine cases, including attempt to murder, dowry harassment, unnatural sex and several other charges.
