External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that the two countries had talked directly without any third party mediation to reduce ceasefire and military action between India and Pakistan. It came a few days after US President Donald Trump’s claim that he has played an important role in reducing tension between India and Pakistan. In an interview with the Netherland -based broadcaster NOS, Jaishankar stressed that India clearly stated the international community including the United States that if Pakistan wants the firing that is stopped, it should directly contact India’s military leadership. Jaishankar said that senior US officials, including External Affairs Minister Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance, approached the tension.

Rubio himself spoke to Jaishankar and Vance approached Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The minister said that such diplomatic access is expected when there are differences between the two major nations, but India maintained a firm stand that the decision would be vested in the direct dialogue between the respective forces. Responding to the question whether the forces interacted to end the enmity, Jaishankar confirmed whether it was actually communicated through the official military hotline. Yes, we have a mechanism to talk to each other as a hotline. Therefore, on May 10, it was a Pakistani army that sent a message that they were ready to shut down the firing, and we responded accordingly. The ceasefire took place after India’s powerful military retaliation – Operation Sindoor, which was launched on 22 April in response to the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 innocent civilians were killed.
