New Delhi. Senior spinner Ravichandran Ashwin welcomed the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision to introduce the Decision Review System (DRS) in the ongoing Duleep Trophy, saying it will help young batsmen make the necessary technical changes before playing at the international level. Ashwin was reacting to the discussion that went on after India D batsman Ricky Bhui was given out LBW during the Duleep Trophy match in Anantapur on Friday evening.

The on-field umpire had not given the batsman out then but India C resorted to DRS after which Bhui had to return to the pavilion. Ashwin wrote on X, “DRS for domestic cricket is not just limited to making the right decision. Ricky Bhuvi (Bhui)’s dismissal off Manav Suthar last evening is a classic case of a batsman who would have been saved if this technology did not exist in first-class cricket.” He said, “Playing forward before DRS was not a faulty technique but now it is. In the old days, batsmen were given not out just because they managed to play on the front foot.

Ashwin believes that now bowlers have the help of DRS to overturn the decision of the on-field umpire, due to which batsmen will have to make necessary changes in their technique at the beginning of their career. He said, “Now keeping your bat behind the pad can be fatal. Imagine someone trying to move forward in international cricket without the experience that Ricky got yesterday. It may take him the entire Test series to understand what kind of changes he needs to make in his game. This may even end his career.
