Bengaluru: Dog meat being sold as mutton? Allegations create uproar, food safety department sends samples for investigation

Bengaluru: A consignment of meat weighing about three tonnes arrived at Bengaluru City Railway Station from Jaipur. The discovery of 150 cartons of meat created a stir among railway officials. According to cow protector Puneet Kerehalli, dog meat was imported into the city. However, meat dealer Abdul Razzaq, who ordered the meat, rejected the allegation. He said that the consignment was ordered legally and it was not dog meat but mutton.

The meat trader said, “We have legal documents to prove it. The tail of the animal that was slaughtered can be seen. This is mutton, not dog meat.” He alleged that Kerehalli wanted to make money by making false allegations. Due to the ruckus, a large number of people gathered there and police was deployed to control the situation. Further investigation into the case is underway.

Supplying dog meat as mutton

There was chaos at the KSR railway station on Friday evening when Hindutva groups alleged that a vendor was supplying dog meat as mutton. They alleged that cartons of the meat were brought from Jaipur via the Jaipur-Mysore Express. However, the vendor claimed that it was mutton and that he has been involved in the business for the past 12 years.

Food safety officers arrived on the scene

Meanwhile, food safety officials reached the spot and collected meat samples for laboratory examination and to ascertain the animal’s meat was being transported. “During inspection, it was found that parcels that came through train from Rajasthan were being loaded into a transport vehicle on the outer premises of the station. There were 90 parcels and upon examination, animal meat was found in the parcels. Samples were collected and sent to the food laboratory for analysis of the animal species,” the commissioner said.

strict legal action

The commissioner also promised that strict legal action will be taken if any case of mixing of any other meat is found. He said, “Further legal action will be taken based on the analysis report. Detailed information about the FSSAI license of the parcel senders and recipients is being collected. If any discrepancy is found, further legal action will be initiated as per the law.” Meanwhile, this has created panic among Bengaluru residents and meat lovers. In an X post, former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai wrote, “This is shocking. When will our government take action?”
