The Gujarat High Court on Friday further extended the interim bail of Swayambhu saint and rape convict Asaram Bapu for three months on medical grounds. The 86 -year -old saint, who was convicted by the Sessions Court in the 2013 rape case in 2023 and being serving a life imprisonment, was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court on medical grounds till 31 March. Since the time had come for him to return to jail, the Gujarat High Court has now extended his temporary bail till 30 June. Asaram Bapu had filed a petition in the High Court demanding a six -month temporary bail, in which his lawyer argued that the doctors had recommended the Panchkarma therapy – 90 -day treatment method.

A division bench of Justices Ilesh J Vora and Sandeep N Bhatt initially ruled on a bail plea, in which Justice Bhatt disagreed. Subsequently, the third judge Justice AS Supehia supported the granting bail, saying that it cannot be said that an 86 -year -old sick person should be limited to any particular therapy or medical practice for treatment. Legal News Outlet Live Law quoted Justice Supehia as saying that thus in favor of the applicant and with a disagreeable approach (Division) Bench, the overall appreciation of the orders passed by the bench and in the light of the Supreme Court order, I am on the opinion that the applicant deserves interim bail.
