A Pune court has granted bail to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in the defamation case filed against him. The case pertains to remarks made by Gandhi which allegedly defamed certain individuals. In the speech, Gandhi reportedly said that VD Savarkar had written in a book about an incident where he and some friends had beaten up a Muslim man, Savarkar reportedly felt happy about it .

Satyaki Savarkar strongly denied these allegations and described them as “imaginary, false and malicious”. He further said that no such incident had ever happened, and VD Savarkar had never written anything to this effect. In his complaint, Savarkar said that Gandhi’s statements were damaging the reputation of his great grandson. After the complaint, Pune Court directed the police to investigate the matter.

Vishrambag police station investigated and concluded that there was prima facie evidence to support the defamation allegations. In the previous hearing, Gandhi’s lawyer had sought exemption from appearing on December 3 due to the winter session of Parliament. The court granted immunity but warned that strict action would be taken if Gandhi did not appear at the next hearing on January 10. At the same time, the hearing to be held on Friday in Sultanpur MP-MLA court in the defamation case against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was postponed due to the lawyers’ strike.
