Protocol officer, who assisted Kannada actress Ranya Rao arrested on charges of smuggling gold, claimed that Karnataka DGP Ramchandra Rao, who is the stepfather of the actress, instructed her to help her especially at the Kemp Gowda International Airport in Bangalore. Constable Basavaraj, posted at the police station at Kamphegowda Airport, revealed that he was following the direct orders of Ramchandra Rao. According to Basavaraja, he received a call from Ranya Rao at 6.20 pm on the day of arrest. He reported him to arrive from Dubai and requested a protocol assistance. Basavaraja was present when the Ranya was leaving the airport, shortly before the Revenue Intelligence Directorate (DRI) officials were arrested. On 4 March, Basavaraj was questioned by DRI officials, who issued summons after Ranya Rao’s arrest. His statement was included in the remand application presented in the court. During interrogation, Basavaraj denied any involvement or information in gold smuggling. He insisted that his conversation with Ranya Rao was limited to the protocol duties handed over by his seniors.
The constable admitted to knowing Ranya Rao for the last few years, and stated that his introduction was purely professional, who was stems from his role at the airport. He said that he had given him a protocol assistance about three to four times, but could not remember the exact date and time. DRI officials seized gold rods (Mahajar) at the airport in the presence of Basavaraj. Despite this, he said that he was not aware of Ranya Rao’s alleged smuggling activities and he had no connection with the matter.
