This is one of the first visits by a senior Indian official to Myanmar since the coup by the junta in 2021. The junta has suffered a humiliating military defeat at the hands of resistance forces and people’s defence forces since several armed groups launched a coordinated offensive in October last year.

India’s concerns about the consequences of violence and instability in Myanmar were discussed in a meeting between National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and his Myanmar counterpart Admiral Moe Aung. Doval is in Myanmar to attend the meeting of security chiefs of member countries of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC). This is one of the first visits to Myanmar by a senior Indian official after the coup by the junta in 2021. The junta has suffered a humiliating military defeat at the hands of resistance forces and people’s defence forces since launching a coordinated offensive by several armed groups in October last year.

The offensive is being seen as the most significant challenge to the junta, as Myanmar has witnessed widespread violence since the military seized power in a coup on February 1, 2021. As resistance forces have taken over military positions and captured key trade posts bordering India, Bangladesh and China, concerns have grown in New Delhi about the impact on the northeastern states. Doval is leading the Indian delegation to the fourth annual meeting of BIMSTEC Security Chiefs, which is taking place in Naypyidaw on Friday, the Indian Embassy in Myanmar said in a post on X.

The Indian embassy said he met Myanmar’s NSA Admiral Moe Aung, and the BIMSTEC security chiefs met Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. Doval’s meeting with his Myanmar counterpart discussed India’s concerns about the security situation in Myanmar. He said the Indian side raised the impact of violence and instability in Myanmar on India’s border areas.
