Former Wrestling Federation of India president and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on Saturday termed Congress leaders and wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajran Punia as “villains”. On September 6, about a month before the Haryana assembly elections, both the veteran wrestlers joined the Congress. Brij Bhushan said that he is the villain of Haryana. Especially of the sportspersons. He said who is Bajrang Punia to talk to me? He used his wife for political gains. Vinesh Phogat broke the rules by participating in a trial.

Punia won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, while Vinesh Phogat became the first female wrestler to reach an Olympic final in Paris last month. The wrestlers had earlier on Friday also resigned from their respective posts in Northern Railways. Within hours of their joining the party, wrestler Vinesh Phogat was fielded from Julana constituency for the upcoming Haryana elections. At the same time, Bajrang Punia was appointed the working president of the All India Kisan Congress. Voting for the 90-member assembly in Haryana will be held on October 5 and the last date for filing nominations is September 12. The counting of votes will take place on October 8.
