Birth and education
Amarinder Singh was born on 11 March 1942 in Punjab province of British India. He belonged to the Punjabi Jat Sikh family of a Indus dynasty. His parents were Maharani Mohinder Kaur and Maharaja Sir Yadvindra Kaur of Patiala. He completed his education from Loreto Convent School in Shimla and Doon School in Dehradun.
Army career
From June 1963 to December 1966, Amarinder Singh served in the Indian Army. He graduated from the National Defense Academy and the Indian Military Academy. He then joined the army. During this time he was commissioned in the Sikh Regiment. Then from December 1964, Western Command General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Lieutenant worked as an assistant to General Harbakhsh Singh. In the year 1965, he left the Indian Army to take care of his family. But the same year he returned to service again due to Indo-Pak war.
Political journey
Rajiv Gandhi included Amarinder Singh in the Indian National Congress. Because he was a school friend and in 1980, Captain Amarinder Singh was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time.
In 1984, he resigned from the Congress to protest the army’s action during Operation Blue Star.
After which Amarinder Singh joined the Shiromani Akali Dal and during this time he was elected to the state assembly from Talwandi Sabo.
However, in the year 1992, he separated from the Akali Dal and formed a separate group Shiromani Akali Dal (Panthi).
At the same time, when Sonia Gandhi took charge of the party in 1998, Amarinder Singh merged it into the Congress party.
He served as the chairman of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee on 3 occasions from 1999 to 2002, 2010 to 2013 and 2015 to 2017.
Amarinder Singh was a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly 5 times.
Punjab CM
In 2002, Captain Amarinder Singh was the Chief Minister of Punjab and remained in the post till 2007.
After this, in 2017, the Congress party led by the Captain won the Punjab Assembly elections and was sworn in as the 26th CM of the state.
But on 18 September 2021, Amarinder Singh resigned from the post of CM due to lack of confidence in his leadership among the Punjab MLAs of Congress.
Punjab Public Congress
Captain Amarinder Singh formed the Punjab Public Congress on 02 November 2021. He formed the party after resigning from the post of CM and leaving the Indian National Congress. Along with this, the party also contested all 117 seats in Punjab in the 2022 elections. But the party could not win any seat in the state assembly elections.
