Lucknow. Congress' Uttar Pradesh unit president Ajay Rai on Thursday blamed the state government for the Hathras stampede incident. “The Hathras incident is a failure of the Uttar Pradesh government. Yesterday the chief minister visited Hathras and later deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak also went there. They did not go together, this shows internal strife,” Rai told reporters at the party's state headquarters here. He reiterated the Congress' demand for a compensation of Rs 1 crore to the families of those killed in the stampede and Rs 25 lakh to the injured. “We also want a judicial inquiry into the incident to be conducted by a sitting judge of the High Court and not a retired judge,” he said.

The state government on Wednesday constituted a judicial inquiry commission headed by a retired judge of the Allahabad High Court to probe the incident. Rai also demanded that NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) should be cancelled and the government should announce the date for re-examination of NEET. The state Congress president alleged that Gujarat-based companies are being given contracts in Uttar Pradesh which are involved in illegal activities. “A Gujarat-based company was given the tender to conduct the Uttar Pradesh police constable exam, but the paper was leaked and the owner of the company has now fled abroad,” Rai said.
