The Congress has broken its silence on the language policy and delimitation issue. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh said that no state should be punished for its success in family planning. I mean, Kerala and Tamil Nadu – South Indian states were the first states to succeed in family planning in India. The first success was found in Kerala. It reached the replacement level of fertility in 1988. Tamil Nadu reached this level in 1993. After that, we had undivided Andhra, we had Karnataka, and then, of course, other states followed it.

Jairam Ramesh further said that states who have not taken family planning seriously should not be rewarded proportionately in terms of seats. He said that linguistic imperialism is also not acceptable. Everyone has the right to learn in their mother tongue. No language should be forcibly imposed on anyone. There are linguistic minorities in every state. We respect all languages. We should respect all languages. And yes, Schedule 8 of the Constitution has 22 official languages, but there are many languages here. India is a multilingual country. Our unity comes from our diversity.
