New Delhi. The Delhi High Court said that drains cannot be allowed to remain clogged and the city should not be waterlogged again in the next monsoon. Along with this, the court issued contempt notices to two senior officials of Delhi government for “ignoring” judicial orders. A bench of Justice Pratibha M Singh and Justice Manmeet PS Arora said that the residents of the city will have to bear the brunt of blockage of drains and waterlogging in the city and this situation cannot be allowed to continue.
The bench took strong exception to non-compliance of the court’s previous order, which had directed the Delhi government to ensure that certain stretches of the Taimur Nagar drain in south-east Delhi are cleaned so that the flow of water from the drain towards the Yamuna river is cleared. There can be uninterrupted water flow.
Counsel for one of the parties in the case informed the court that no cleaning work has been done in Taimur Nagar drain, which is still clogged. The court issued contempt notices to two senior Delhi government officials for “disobeying” judicial orders. The bench directed that the officers should file an affidavit in response to this notice within three days and both should appear before the court on the next date, December 20.
