The departure of the T20 World Cup winning Indian cricket team from the Caribbean island has been delayed as the charter flight is yet to arrive here. A special Air India charter flight named AIC24WC (Air India Champions 24 World Cup) is set to bring back the Indian team, its support staff, players' families and some Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials and Indian media who have been stranded here for the last three days due to cyclone Beryl.
The Rohit Sharma-led team won the title with a thrilling seven-run win over South Africa in the final on Saturday. The flight, which took off from New Jersey in the US on July 2, is expected to reach Barbados at 2 am local time.
As per the schedule, the flight is now expected to take off from Barbados at 4:30 am (local time). It will take 16 hours to reach Delhi where the team will land at 6 am (Indian time) on Thursday, provided there is no further delay in the team's departure.
Operations resumed at the Grantley Adams International Airport here on Tuesday. Earlier, the Indian team was scheduled to depart on July 2 at 6 pm local time and arrive on Wednesday at 7.45 pm (Indian time).
The players will be felicitated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi but the programme has not been finalised yet. Hurricane Beryl has now downgraded from category five to category four and is heading towards Jamaica.
