Taking an important step towards sustainable public transport, the national capital is set to welcome 500 new electric buses on its streets in the next two months. Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Singh announced on Friday, in which he emphasized the government’s commitment to make Delhi a major center for electric vehicles (EV) in India. During a review meeting focused on integration of electric buses in the city’s public transport fleet, Minister Singh said that the government aims to start a total of 1,000 electric buses by the end of the year.

Singh said that we are making rapid changes in our public transport system. He said that within the next two months, 500 new electric buses will come on the roads and by the end of this year the number will increase to 1,000. The purpose of these efforts is to provide clean and more convenient transport options for all residents. He further requested that these buses should be started quickly so that the public can get benefits without delay. He said, “By including these electric buses in our public transport network, we are taking a decisive step towards making Delhi the EV capital of the country.”

Delhi is already running small electric buses, known as “Devi” buses. These buses run on a small route, which covers a maximum of 12 kilometers. The review meeting was attended by senior officials of the Transport Department and representatives of prominent electric bus manufacturers and suppliers including PMI Electro Mobility, Switch Mobility and JBM. Minister Singh also called upon the bus sender to expedite the delivery of electric buses and to prefer the development of EV charging infrastructure at the major depots to ensure smooth and uninterrupted operations.
