The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Wednesday demanded Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honor to Indian -origin astronaut Sunita Williams. Raising the issue during the Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, party MP Nadeemul Haq said that the country is proud of the achievements of Williams and Buch Wilmore, which has returned to Earth in late March after spending nine months at the International Space Station (ISS), the government should consider honoring them.

Haq said that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had also demanded that Williams be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award as a fair tribute to her remarkable achievement. Haq said that the achievement of Williams would make ISRO proud and he said that great institutions were built before 2014. He said, “We demand Bharat Ratna for a great person whose Indian and Gujarati roots are strong.” The TMC member further stated that Williams was honored during his visit to India in 2007.
