Senior US Congress Brad Sherman called for decisive action against terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed during a meeting in Washington with a Pakistani delegation led by former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and more security for religious minorities in Pakistan. The meeting was held with a parallel visit by an Indian multi -party parliamentary delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, which is in the US to inform the authorities about India’s anti -terrorism response after Operation Sindoor and the 22 April Pahalgam attack.
Pakistan accused of supporting terrorist groups
After meeting Bhutto Zardari, Sherman posted on the social media platform X, saying that I emphasized the importance of the Pakistani delegation fighting terrorism and especially the Jaish-e-Mohammed group, who killed Daniel Pearl, a resident of my constituency in 2002. America demanded the release of a person helping to kill bin Laden
Sherman also urged the delegation to advocate Dr. Shakeel Afridi’s release, who is a Pakistani physician and who helped American intelligence agencies to detect Osama bin Laden. Afridi was arrested immediately after the 2011 raid and was sentenced to 33 years in jail by a Pakistani court. He is in jail till date. Sherman said that releasing Afridi would be a meaningful step for the victims of 9/11 attacks.
Concern on religious freedom in Pakistan
The US MP expressed deep concern over the behavior being done with religious minorities including Christians, Hindus and Ahmedia Muslims in Pakistan. He emphasized that these communities should be allowed to follow their religion independently and participate in the democratic process without fear of violence, discrimination or systemic injustice.
