A circular of the Central Government states that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shaktikanta Das, IAS (retired) as Principal Secretary -2 of Prime Minister -2. It states that his appointment will be “co-surrendered” or further order with the Prime Minister’s tenure.

Shaktikanta Das, 67, is a career diplomat. He became the RBI Governor in 2018 after Urjit Patel’s sudden resignation. Das, an IAS officer of the 1980 batch Tamil Nadu cadre, Das has a master’s degree in history from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi and a postgraduate degree in Public Administration from the University of Birmingham.

He was the Secretary of Economic Affairs when the government suddenly discontinued high -value currency notes in November 2016. Das played an important role when several indirect taxes were merged into one GST, which came into force on 1 July 2017. Shaktikanta Das served as an RBI governor for six years, including a three -year expansion during his tenure. He is a former IAS officer of the 1980-batch Tamil Nadu cadre and took the role of RBI Governor in December 2018. During his tenure as the RBI Governor, he carried forward the central bank’s response through several challenges, including global economic uncertainties such as the Kovid -19 epidemic and the Russia -Ukraine War.
