Rajapaksa is the most high-profile personality questioned by the police after the formation of the new government led by Anura Kumar Dissanayaka in November last year. Ahead of the election, the National People’s Power (NPP) government vowed to reopen anti-corruption cases filed between 2015 and 2019 in which Rajapaksa was accused.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned from the presidency on July 14, 2022, less than three years into his five-year term, amid protests against him in the country over his depletion in foreign exchange reserves and failure to handle the economic crisis.
