Free trade between India-UK, PM Modi told the milestone, said- Waiting to meet the stormer

India and Britain announced a comprehensive trade agreement, under which tariffs have been removed on most goods and services. This step may prove to be the precursor to similar agreements between other countries including New Delhi and the US. In a tweet, the Prime Minister announced the deal, describing it as a historic milestone and said that he is soon eager to meet UK PM Keer Starmer in India. After Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit to London on April 28, the two countries expected to announce the conclusion of the talks on 29 April, but the discussion was carried forward in the last minute.

The Indo-Bitten Free Trade Agreement took place after a nine-month stop in February after the dialogue started in February. This has become important at a time when US President Donald Trump has announced a mutual tariff on business partners, which is currently postponed till 9 July. India is negotiating free trade agreements with the US and many other countries. The talks with Britain began on 13 January 2021, which initially moved forward during Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s tenure, but slowed down between political changes in London. The 14th round of talks started again in February 2025 after Prime Minister Kir Starmer’s government came to power, after which the talks rose.

Goyal and UK Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds announced the resumption of talks on 24 February after a nine -month stop. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s visit to UK on 9 April intensified the discussions, during which she met PM Starmer, Chanchal Reeves and Reynolds. Technical-related cases related to trade, investment and social security were mainly responsible for the delay. According to Port, the negotiaters reached the solution, addressing the demands of London for the market access to New Delhi’s business dynamics and the more market access for automobiles and scotch whiskey.
