Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Praveen Khandelwal took a dig at the West Bengal government for the violence in Murshidabad over the Waqf (Amendment) Act and said it is worrying how the freedom of expression in the state is being suppressed and the government is not taking any action.

Describing the Murshidabad violence as unfortunate, Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Saturday attacked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and said that Hindus are being “forced” to flee the state. Singh told reporters in Begusarai that the security of Muslims as well as Hindus is the responsibility of Mamata Banerjee. Murshidabad violence shows that Hindus are being forced to flee West Bengal. It is unfortunate that all this is happening in front of the state government.

This happened when demonstrations opposing the Waqf Act in Murshidabad became violent and public property was damaged. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on 2 and 3 April respectively. More than 110 people were arrested in connection with the violence erupted during the protest against the Waqf (Amendment) Act in the Muslim -majority Murshidabad district of West Bengal. The police gave this information on Saturday. Violence erupted in Malda, Murshidabad, South 24 Parganas and Hooghly districts on Friday over the new law and several vehicles including police vans were set on fire, security forces were stoned and roads were blocked. Police said that raids are being conducted in all these districts and more than 110 people have been arrested in Murshidabad.
