Masood told ANI that it is the responsibility of the government to protect the right to equality. How can you crush our religious freedom? You talk about Pasmanda, poor Muslims… but you are closing the madrasa. Who studies in madrasa?
Amidst the opposition’s strong objection to the passage of the Waqf Amendment Bill, Congress MP Imran Masood on Friday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Center of running a bulldozer to the religious freedom of Muslims. Highlighting the closure of madrasas, he questioned the government’s concern for Pasmanda Muslims, where he said that poor children study. He said that the Congress will knock the door of the Supreme Court against the passage of the Waqf Amendment Bill.
Masood told ANI that it is the responsibility of the government to protect the right to equality. How can you crush our religious freedom? You talk about Pasmanda, poor Muslims… but you are closing the madrasa. Who studies in madrasa? Only poor children. He accused the central government of crushing the rights of minorities. Masood said that the right to equality is given by the Constitution and the patron of the Constitution is the Supreme Court. We will go to the Supreme Court. Will you take away our right to religious freedom just because you have a majority?
The Congress MP said that having a majority does not mean that you can crush the rights of minorities. Since you do not have the right to change the constitution, you are partially harming it. Meanwhile, BJP MP Jagdambika Pal appreciated the “major reform” of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 by Parliament, saying that Waqf properties would not be registered in a portal which will soon be launched by the Ministry of Minority Affairs. He said that the Waqf Board failed to open universities and hospitals on properties for poor Muslims. He further said that instead of the poor, only a few people have managed to take advantage of it.
