Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif has expressed his desire to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the future. He advocated better relations with the neighboring country. Nawaz said in an exclusive interview with Indian journalist Barkha Dutt that I have always been a supporter of good relations with India. He expressed hope that there is an opportunity to revive the relationship. Nawaz said it would have been great if Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi had also attended the SCO summit. Relations between India and Pakistan came under severe strain after Indian warplanes attacked the Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist training camp in Balakot, Pakistan in February 2019 in response to the Pulwama terror attack. On August 5, 2019, relations deteriorated further after India announced the withdrawal of special powers to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcation of the state into two union territories. Pakistan downgraded diplomatic ties with India after New Delhi abrogated Article 370.
However, Nawaz Sharif has repeatedly advocated positive relations with India. Last year he had stressed the need to improve relations with neighbours, including India and Afghanistan. He recalled that two Indian Prime Ministers, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi, had visited Pakistan. He congratulated Modi on winning for a record third time and said it shows the confidence people have in their relationship.
