Senior IPS officer Tapan Kumar Deka was given one year and tenure expansion as the Intelligence Bureau chief on Tuesday. The order stated that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the expansion of deka’s service as the director of the Intelligence Bureau for a period of one year ahead of June 30, 2025. Since 2022, Deka, who was working in this post, took over as the new chief in 2022. He is a 1988 batch officer of Himachal Pradesh cadre.

The IB chief was initially appointed for two years and was later given a year expansion in June 2024. The release states that they have been extended to the provisions of Rule 16 (1A) and FR56 (D) of the All India Service (Death to Death -Cum Retired Benefits) Rules, 1958. Rules allow the Central Government to increase the services of IB and Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), Cabinet Secretary, Home Secretary and others to increase the services of 60 years in public interest after 60 years of retirement age.
