In six districts of the violence affected state of Manipur, people handed over a total of 104 weapons and ammunition to the police. The police gave this information on Thursday. A senior official said that these weapons were handed over to Kangpokpi, Imphal-East, Bishnupur, Thobal, Imphal-West and Kakching districts on Wednesday.
Seven days time was given by the administration to hand over arms, the weapon was handed over to the police a day before the end. Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla appealed to the people of the state on February 20 to voluntarily hand over the weapons looted and kept illegally kept to the police within seven days.
He also assured that no punitive action would be taken against those who handed over arms during this period. Chief Secretary PK Singh said on 23 February that if a person really wants to hand over his weapon, then a seven -day period is sufficient to do so.
He had clarified that the security forces would take action for the seizure of illegal weapons after this period ended. More than 250 people have died and thousands have become homeless so far in ethnic violence that started in May 2023, which started in Mayti and hilly areas in the Imphal Valley.
The central government implemented President’s rule in Manipur on 13 February. A few days before this, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned from his post, causing political uncertainty in the state. According to the notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Manipur Assembly has been suspended.
