Milwaukee (USA). Referring to India's old relations with Russia, the US has said that it has urged New Delhi to “use” its relations with Moscow to appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the “illegal war” against Ukraine. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in his daily press conference on Monday, “India has a very old relationship with Russia. I think everyone knows this. We have encouraged India to use these old relations with Russia, its unique position and urge President Putin to end his illegal war, achieve a just and lasting peace in this conflict and respect the United Nations Charter, the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.
Responding to a question, Miller said, “We will continue to emphasize this to the Indian government. India is an important partner for us in terms of relations with Russia.” Miller had made similar remarks on July 9, soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi left Russia. Modi was in Russia for two days on July 8-9 for the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit.
Amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, his visit was also closely watched by Western countries. This was Modi's first visit to Russia after Russia's invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago. Prime Minister Modi had told Putin on July 9, in the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, that peace talks do not succeed amid bombs, guns and bullets and no solution to any conflict is possible on the battlefield. India has been strongly defending its “special and privileged strategic partnership” with Russia and has maintained momentum in relations with Russia despite the war in Ukraine. India has not yet condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and has advocated a resolution of the conflict through continuous dialogue and diplomacy.
