‘India will postpone it as long as Pakistan …’, Ministry of External Affairs statement on Indus Water Treaty suspension

A day after the Pahalgam terror attack on 22 April, the Cabinet Committee of Security Affairs (CCS) decided to suspend the treaty. In addition, India took some more strict measures against Pakistan over the ‘cross -border relations’ in the investigation of the Pahalgam attack. This includes closing the integrated check post on the Attari-Wagah border, canceling the SAARC Visa Rebate scheme for Pakistani citizens and declaring defense/military, Navy and air advisors as unwanted persons at the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi.

Speaking on the Indus Water Treaty, Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said that Pakistan has postponed the principles of the Indus Water Treaty, after which India suspended the treaty. “The Indus Water Treaty was concluded with the spirit of goodwill and friendship specified in the preamble of this treaty. However, Pakistan has postponed these principles by promoting terrorism across the border for decades. Jaiswal said in the media briefing,” Now, according to the CCS decision of April 23, India will keep the pace until Pakistan renounces its supportable and irreplaceable form. Please also keep in mind that climate change, demographic changes and technical changes have given rise to new realities on the ground. “

Meanwhile, Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has said that if the issues of Indus Water Treaty are not resolved, the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan will be in danger. Dar alleged, “If India and Pakistan fail to resolve issues related to the Indus Water Treaty, the ceasefire may be in danger. If it does not resolve, it will be equal to war action.” His comments in New Delhi have been widely seen as an attempt to divert attention from international embarrassment after Pakistan’s military loss and India’s targeted air and ground operations.
