London: Nine-year-old Indian-origin schoolgirl Bodhna Sivanandan is set to create chess history as she becomes the youngest player to represent England internationally in any sport. Bodhna, from Harrow in north-west London, will be part of the England women's team at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary in September. The other players in the squad are all over 20 years old.
Bodhna told the BBC on Wednesday, “I came to know about this when my father told me after coming back from school yesterday. I was happy. I hope I will do well and get another title.” England chess team manager Malcolm Paine described schoolgirl Bodhna as one of the most remarkable British chess talents he has ever seen. He said, “It is exciting – she is on her way to becoming one of the best British players ever.” Bodhna's father Shiva Sivanandan said that he still wonders where his daughter got this talent from.
Shiva said, “I am an engineering graduate, my wife is also an engineering graduate but I am not good at chess.” Bodhna first learned to play chess during the lockdown during the pandemic when Shiva's friend was going back to India and he gave him some bags which also had a chess board. Bodhna said, “I was interested in the pieces so I started playing.” Last December, Bodhna won the European Blitz Chess Championship in Zagreb, Croatia and was described as 'super talented' at that time.
