ipl matches may be 94 in ipl 2028 but without new teams bcci arun dhumal

A total of 74 matches are to be played in IPL 2025. In the 2026 and 2027 IPL, the same match will be played with the same. However, the number of IPL matches is expected to increase in 2028. The BCCI is considering increasing the number of IPL matches. From the 2028 season, the number of IPL matches can be from 74 to 94. However, there is no plan to get a new team or franchise in the near future.

Since 2022, the format of 74 matches in the IPL is going on, in which seven matches of teams are played at home and seven matches at the house of other teams. But a provision can be made to play home and outside 9-9 matches from 2028. Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants have started playing since 2022. Initially, there were plans to conduct an IPL of 84 matches since 2025, but in view of the international calendar, the IPL has to be limited on 74 matches.

In the ICC’s Future Tour Program i.e. AFTP, the IPL window has been closed for the next two years, which will run from mid -March to the end of May, but IPL chairman Arun Dhumal told ESPNCricinfo that BCCI will consider the expansion of 94 matches for the next media rights cycle, which will start in 2028.

At the same time, Dhumal said that, it could definitely be an opportunity. We are discussing with ICC, we are discussing in-house in BCCI. Given that in relation to bilateral and ICC events, how the fans are changing the interest of franchise cricket and T20 cricket, we have to talk more seriously about it and see how we can make maximum value for sports stakeholders.

He said that, ideally, we want a big window or probably want to go from 74 to 84 or 94 matches at some time. Every team needs 94 matches for every team to get a chance to play home and outside. Given the windows and commitments that our windows and commitments regarding bilateral cricket and ICC events, it may not be possible in the short term, but given the Senaryo, how it has been changing and being developed over the years, perhaps we will consider this option and adopt it.
