Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party on Monday in the face of growing discontent over his leadership. Trudeau came to power in 2015 after 10 years of rule by the Conservative Party. “After the party selects its next leader through a robust, nationwide competitive process, I intend to resign as party leader as Prime Minister,” Trudeau said at a news conference. This country deserves a real choice in the next election and it has become clear to me that if I have to fight an internal battle, I cannot be the best choice in that election.

Trudeau became leader of the Liberal Party in 2013, when he faced a huge crisis and was reduced to third place in the House of Commons of Canada for the first time. His resignation is expected to raise fresh demands for quick elections to deal with the challenges after Donald Trump assumed the presidency of the United States on January 20. In December last year, Jagmeet Singh, leader of key ally New Democratic Party (NDP), had said he would table a motion to topple the minority Liberal government.
