New Delhi. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that Khelo India Scheme has identified 2781 sportspersons in 21 sports including Para Athletics and they are being provided necessary support as part of the Khelo India Talent Development Programme. “The Khelo India scheme identifies and nurtures talent through its Khelo India Talent Development Program by supporting athletes across 21 sports, including para athletics, based on specific guidelines and criteria,” Mandaviya said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. ”
“Till date, 2781 Khelo India Players (KIA) have been identified under the scheme who are provided support through coaching, equipment, medical care and monthly out of pocket allowance (OPA),” he said. Players identified as SAI are training at National Centers of Excellence as well as other recognized academies under the Sports Authority of India (SAI). Mandaviya said the program is strengthening India’s sports talent pool and contributing to the country’s growing success on the global stage. The minister also gave details of Khelo India players who participated in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games and Paris Olympics and brought glory to the country.
He said, “Out of 644 Indian athletes at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, there were 124 KIAs and they made significant contributions by winning 42 of India’s 106 medals, including nine gold medals.” The Indian contingent of 117 players for the Olympics included 28 KIAs which reflects the success of the program and the important role of KIAs in enhancing India’s performance in national and international sporting events. Mandaviya highlighted that ‘Promotion of Rural and Indigenous/Tribal Sports’ is part of the Khelo India scheme and is dedicated to promoting rural and indigenous sports across the country.
