The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) advocates cell, led by secretary I S Imbadurai, staged a protest in front of the Madras High Court against three new criminal laws – the Indian Justice Code, the Indian Evidence Act and the Indian Civil Protection Code.
Chennai. A large number of lawyers in Chennai and other cities of Tamil Nadu protested on Friday against the Sanskritised Hindi names of the three new criminal laws that came into force across the country from July 1 and demanded their immediate withdrawal. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Advocate Cell, led by Secretary I S Imbadurai, protested in front of the Madras High Court against the three new criminal laws – Indian Judicial Code, Indian Evidence Act and Indian Civil Protection Code.
Former MLA Imbadurai later told reporters that these laws should be withdrawn immediately as they would create confusion. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) advocate cell secretary N R Elango led a similar protest here. Elango alleged that these three criminal laws are “anti-democracy and anti-constitution as their names are in Hindi which cannot be done as per Article 348.”
“These are against the interests of the persons accused of crime and also the victims of crime. Therefore, these cannot be implemented. These must be abolished and reconsidered,” Elango told reporters. He said Parliament will have to initiate an exercise to reconsider these laws, otherwise the DMK's legal wing and the advocate community of Tamil Nadu will not sit quiet.
