There is a looming threat of President’s rule. The BJP-led central government could cite policy paralysis to justify imposing President’s rule. Since Delhi is a national capital territory, the Lieutenant Governor will send the Delhi Chief Minister’s recommendation to the President through the Home Ministry.
After AAP convenor and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that he will resign from the post of Chief Minister after 48 hours, this decision has raised two important questions. First, who will be the temporary Chief Minister of the national capital till the elections are held? Second, will the Election Commission allow early elections as requested by the AAP leader? Another important crisis is the looming threat of President’s rule. The BJP-led central government could cite policy paralysis to justify the imposition of President’s rule. Since Delhi is a national capital territory, the Lieutenant Governor will send the recommendation of the Chief Minister of Delhi to the President through the Home Ministry.
The Lieutenant Governor has the power to dissolve the Assembly on the advice of the Chief Minister. Currently, there is no proposal to dissolve the Delhi Assembly, which may reduce the possibility of imposition of President’s rule. Firstly, choosing a CM for a few months can create a lot of problems, as was seen recently between JMM’s Hemant Soren and Champai Soren in Jharkhand and in 2014 in Bihar after JDU chief Nitish Kumar took back the top seat from Jitan Ram Manjhi. Now the question is also arising whether Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will hand over this responsibility to a member of his family? However, the name of his wife Sunita Kejriwal has been in the news since the Lok Sabha elections, when CM Kejriwal came out on interim bail for some time for election campaigning. Since then, there has been a constant discussion about Sunita Kejriwal’s claim for the post of CM.
There is also a discussion that after resigning from his post, no name should be finalised. It should be said that no consensus could be reached on any name. Then the LG will be forced to take the reins of Delhi in his hands. President’s rule will be imposed and then elections will be announced in a month or two. Apart from this, even if there is less than six months left, the LG can recommend that the assembly be dissolved and fresh elections be held. Till then Kejriwal can spread the narrative that I am innocent, I was framed.
