Mandeep's passion for hockey has grown over the years, says his sister Bhupinderjeet

New Delhi. Indian hockey forward Mandeep Singh may not have achieved the fame of his captain Harmanpreet Singh or former captain Manpreet Singh, but when he is on the field, the rival defenders cannot make the mistake of taking him lightly. Mandeep (29 years), who was part of the bronze medal winning team in the Tokyo Olympics, will play an important role in India's campaign in the Paris Olympics. His sister Bhupinderjit Kaur says that Mandeep's passion for hockey has increased in the last few years and he gets restless if he stays away from the national camp even for a few days.

Kaur said in an episode of 'Hockey Pe Charcha', “He was so crazy about playing hockey that he would come home from school, skip his meals and go straight to practice. As Mandeep grew up, his commitment to the game grew stronger.” She said, “Even now when I talk to him during breaks, he says he enjoys being at home but after 15 days he starts missing the camp.” Mandeep's performance against Belgium in the semi-finals of the Tokyo Olympics had upset the rival team. But India lost it.

Though India returned with a bronze medal, making every player a national hero, Kaur says Mandeep simply does not want the limelight. “He does not like to be called a star, but prefers to be an ordinary player,” she said. Recalling the celebrations at home after India won the bronze medal after defeating Germany in Tokyo, Kaur said it filled everyone with pride. “We were all watching it on TV. Mandeep looked up with tears in his eyes. Everyone at home was praying for victory. When we finally won, it felt like we had achieved something big. The atmosphere at home was full of joy and pride,” Kaur said.
